American Style Spring Ballet
A lighthearted yet poignant ballet filled with exuberance and sass. Featuring the swinging harmonies of famed forties trio the Andrews Sisters, with their “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Rum and Coca-Cola,”and other classic hits.
Featuring the brilliant musical score of the same name by Antonín Dvořák, the choreography never ceases to amaze as it challenges the dancers’ musicality and skill through intricate steps, weighty partnerships, and artistic creativity.
Although set on a rugged Old West street full of cowboys and dance hall girls, this ballet is very much a classical work, while infused with steps reminiscent of folk dancing to traditional American melodies arranged by Hershy Kay. A striking example of Balanchine’s fascination with American themes.
