La Source George Balanchine
A ballet’s ballet, this “frothy, playful classical wonder” (New York City Ballet) began as a pas de deux choreographed on the Jacobs School’s late dance icon, Distinguished Professor Violette Verdy, and John Prinz to music by Léo Delibes. Verdy enthused that it “is a translation, in choreography, of great singing.” A year later, Balanchine added divertissements and nine more dancers.
Autumnsongs - World Premiere Christian Claessens
A long-standing and revered Jacobs School faculty member, Christian Claessens is a former member of Dutch National Ballet, toured internationally as a soloist in several troupes, and directed his own ballet school. This neo-classical work is set to music by Jacobs faculty composer Don Freund.
Heatscape Justin Peck
Tony Award-winning Peck, resident choreographer for New York City Ballet, and visual artist Shepard Fairey collaborated to create this beautiful synthesis of dance and street art for Miami City Ballet. A score by Bohuslav Martinů complements their use of patterns and symmetry.
Shibuya Blues* Annabelle Lopez Ochoa
Inspired by one of the busiest districts in Tokyo, international award-winning Colombian-Belgian choreographer Ochoa said she wanted “to go from a mechanical phrase into phrases that would move into space” for this abstract piece set to an eclectic and sometimes cacophonous soundscape.

George Balanchine’s high regard for Léo Delibes as a composer of music for ballet led him to choreograph a pas de deux from Delibes’s Sylvia in 1950, which Balanchine later expanded into a divertissement in 1965. Balanchine’s desire to use more of Delibes’s music prompted him to choreograph La Source incorporating music from two of Delibes’s ballets, Naila and Sylvia. The present La Source presents a showcase reminiscent of nineteenth-century French ballet to nineteenth-century French music.

In many ways, it is a biographical reflection of the creator. The music, Autumnsongs, composed by Jacobs School of Music faculty member Don Freund in 2010, adds yet another collaborative color to the work.
